Cambridge Pick-Up Street Hockey

Hi Everyone, I hope to get games up and running again starting in March/April this year (2019). I'll start scheduling games regularly. Tell your friends, and hope to see you all soon!
-Scott F

As of 19Sep2018, I've stopped creating events and sending invites, as it's been a while since we've had enough yes RSVPs to play. I've updated the settings on OpenSports so that anyone who joins the group can create events and invite the entire group to events. Also, anyone in the group should be able to see the full member list.

If you're new to the group, welcome!

If you've been here before and are not sure if it contains anything new, this was last updated on 17Jul2018.

We play pick-up street hockey on Sunday mornings at Corporal Burns Park, located at 32 Flagg St at the corner of Flagg St and Memorial Drive in Cambridge MA, USA. The park has an outdoor public street hockey rink.

This is a free informal pick-up game, open to the public. We play at the recreational level, and have players of all skill levels. No experience necessary. There are no costs at all to join and play with us.

We play 4 on 4, in sneakers, using a ball. There's free on-street parking for all, even non-residents, on Sundays. Please bring a stick, water, and an extra yellow shirt for teams. There is a water fountain that Cambridge turns on in the summer.

There are no set teams. Each week we divide the people who show up into two teams. We have yellow penny jerseys, so the teams are yellow vs all the other colors. We play from 9:30am until about noon, but people come and go as suits them. If you show up and we're already playing, put your stick at the end of one of the queues on either side of the gate. The stick closest to the gate is the next person to go in when someone comes off.

Invitations to our weekly games are typically sent mid-week. You do not need the OpenSports app to join events and receive invites. You can join groups/events through the web without downloading the app. While you don’t need to download the OpenSports app to receive invites, you do need to at least log-in on the website (or mobile optimized website) in order join the group and receive invites to our events.

If you aren't getting our weekly email invites:
-Check your email spam folder
-Check to make sure you have email notifications enabled in Facebook and OpenSports (if you signed up for OpenSports via Facebook and didn't share your email address or if you disabled email notifications)
-Check your OpenSports app to see if you have push notifications enabled (if they are, then you will receive the invites by push notification through the app without getting any emails)
-Check to make sure you are logged in to the OpenSports app

Please RSVP for each Sunday's game prior to the weekend. If not enough people sign up, or if the weather for Sunday is looking bad, then the game will be cancelled on Saturday, and you should get a notification in app and/or by email. Please make sure to check to see if the game was cancelled before coming. If there is no game cancellation, then it is game on, in which case a "game on" message will be posted on Saturday in the chat dialogue for that game.

If you have trouble RSVPing, here are instructions on how to RSVP for each weekly game:
Step 1: Click “Join The Event” button from the weekly email.
Step 2: Click “Join (Free)” button.
Step 3: Fill in empty bubble next to “Player (Free)” and hit “Get Spot (US$0.00)” button.
Step 4: It will take you to a sign up screen. Scroll to the bottom and hit the “Log In” text within “Have an account? Log In”.
Step 5: Insert your login details and hit “Login” button.
Step 6: This will take you to the event screen with your attendance confirmation in place. You should see your picture in the event count. For example, it might say, “7 going, 9 spots left”. Click on this text to see individual attendees.
Step 7: You’ll see a list of “Attendees” and you should be able to see your name.

We play through the winter, as snow and ice permit. On weeks where there is a lot of snow on the ground, don't expect any game invites, as the rink will be unplayable.

We've got a great group of people who help out in all kinds of ways. Thank you all for helping make this group be so fun, friendly, and successful! Anyone is welcome to step up and help out with things, such as volunteering to play goalie (we have a full set of goalie gear if you need it), spreading the word to your friends to come play with us, carrying and laundering team equipment such as penny jerseys or balls or goalie gear, calling out high sticks during games, checking the rink in the winter to share the snow and ice conditions, organizing fund collections for team equipment such as balls or goalie gear, making and balancing teams each Sunday, etc. Please see any of the people who show up regularly if you have any questions or would like to help with any of these things.

Sometimes we have Winter Classic and Summer Classic events. These events may include skills competitions, round-robin tournaments, team pictures, team shirts, and food.

Team Rules

  1. SAFETY FIRST. Keep the blade of your stick at or below your waist at all times. This is regardless of where the ball is or whether or not the ball was touched. The reason is safety, as most of our players don't wear any face protection. Please be conscious that if you are tall, carrying the stick at your hip could put the tip of your blade near another player's face. Be careful with keeping your stick down on the wind up and follow through on slap shots, and consider others' safety when taking slap shots. If you think a play might be a bit aggressive, please don't do it. No hacking, elbowing, checking, or playing too rough. Lifting sticks is allowed, just keep it low.
  2. BE RESPECTFUL. We're all here to have fun. It's fine to be competitive, but it's never ok to be mean to people. We're all on the same team. Be nice to each other.

Looking forward to playing with you!
