THURSDAYS IN MANAYUNK

Team registration Opens December 6th. We are currently working on a 2nd location since we had overwhelming interest this fall. We hope to have it secured by the league start in January, but if we don't have it secured by the time registration is opens, teams after the first 9 will be able to join the waitlist.

The Philly Volleyball Leagues are a great way to get in shape and meet new people. This competitive league offers adult co-ed indoor volleyball played at North Light Community Center.

This level is primarily for advanced players, seasoned athletes with strong volleyball skills and requires knowledge of competitive volleyball offenses and defenses. Teams in this league are all running an offensive system (usually either 5-1 or 6-2). For those familiar with our organization, these are a mix of our A and AA-level players

Weekly rundown

Every Thursday evening, your team will play one of the four (4) matches scheduled, the earliest beginning at 6:30 pm. Assuming the schedule holds, the last match will start at 9:30 pm. Qualified referees will officiate. Each team will pay the referee $15 per match.

GAMES

All games will be played using All-Rally Scoring rules. There are no side-outs and matches will consist of three (3) games. Each game will count in the overall standings for the regular season.

Matches will be played within the allotted time (Penalties for every 10 minutes a team is past the scheduled start time.) All games are played to 25, win by two, or first to 31. One time-out per game, per team, is allowed. (In certain circumstances, games will be played, first to 25 when games are running behind schedule)

PLAYOFFS

The top eight teams make playoffs. Quarterfinal and semifinal games will be the best 2 out of 3 to 25, win by two, with no cap. Finals will be played as the best 3 out of 5 to 25 in the first 4 games, win by two, no cap, the fifth game to 15, win by two, with no cap.

TEAM SIZE

Each team consists of 6 players on the court at one time (never more than four players on the court identifying as men or non-binary). If a team has four players with a minimum of 1 identifying as a woman, it will be considered a legal game. However, the opposing team will have the option to utilize the ghost rule, which means that when it comes time for the missing player(s) to serve, that team will lose the service, and a point is awarded to the opposing team.

Playing with four players does not mean you can play with quads rules; players must play their position in a 6v6 rotation.

Teams may have up to 9 players on their roster. There is no maximum limit on the number of those identifying as females on the court at one time.

SUBSTITUTIONS

Teams may find substitutions from anywhere the like during the regular season. In the postseason, any subs must have played with your team twice during the regular season and that sub may only play for a single team for the entire postseason.

FORFEITS

Teams will forfeit one game every 10 minutes past the designated start time that they do not have the legal number of players. If no players are present from a team by 15 minutes after the specified start time, the missing team will forfeit the entire match, and the team that is present will receive all three wins. (Exception: Teams with less than four players or without one identifying as women may still play a "legal" game but only with the opposing team's consent.) All teams that consent to play a legal game with less than the allowed minimum waive their right to a forfeit win. Teams may pick up players during the regular season to field a full team. A team that forfeits their match is charged with a $30 forfeit fee; $15 for your team's ref fees, $15 for the opponent.

GAME PLAY
  • A legal serve crosses the net and is either touched by an opposing player or lands within the opposing team's area of the court within the boundary lines.
  • The server may not step on or over the end line until the ball has been contacted. The width of the service area is from sideline to sideline. The depth of the service area is infinite.
  • No service tossing errors are allowed at the competitive level.
  • A defensive block does not count as one of the allowable contacts. A player may reach over the net to block a ball if any portion of the ball breaks the net plane.
  • You cannot block a set that does not cross the plane of the net to the other side.
  • The serve may not be blocked or spiked.
  • Players can return the serve by a bump pass, clapping their hands together, a closed fist, a set (AS LONG AS THE BALL IS NOT CAUGHT OR CARRIED)
  • No part of the body may touch the net at any time unless a ball or person driven into the net causes the contact. Player contact with the net in a manner not directly relating to or affecting the course of play is not a violation. Contact with hair or part of the uniform will not be considered a fault.
  • Contact of the ball when spiking is legal only if a portion of the ball is in contact with the net plane or on the spiker's side of the net. Spikers may follow through over the net after legal contact.
  • The ball must be cleanly hit when spiking with an open hand. Guiding or carrying is illegal.
  • A carry is any use of an open hand(s) while making contact with the ball that is not in a firm manner. If the ball sits in your hand at any time, it is a carry.
  • A player may touch but not completely cross over the center line with his/her foot.
  • The ball can contact any number of body parts down to and including the foot.
