Pickleball FUN Community (PFC) & Ashburton Pool & Recreation Centre (ASHY) WEDNESDAY WORKOUT BEGINNER TO LOWER INT. session offers 2 indoor Pickleball Courts, with all equipment including a variety of demo paddles (Joola, Hustle, 6.0 & Obelisk) to try out during your Pickleball FUN session.

BEGINNER TO LOWER INTERMEDIATE CLASSIFICATIONS

You are considered a Beginner to Lower Intermediate Player based on:

  1. Your current DUPR Rating is 3.49 and under
  2. Your current DUPR Reliability Score is below 60% or you are just starting and
  3. You currently don't have a DUPR Rating set up on https://www.dupr.com/

** PLEASE NOTE: To move up to the Intermediate to Advance courts, you will need to improve your DUPR Rating to 3.5 and DUPR Reliability Score to 60%. One way is to set up some Pickleball FUN DUPR matches within the session with your existing group of Beginner Players. We can help accelerate this through the club and record all the matches on the Pickleball FUN DUPR page. Please let the certified coach know.

** Another option is to DRILL between the next 4 players coming on the court, for up to 8 MINUTES. The drills are what the players decide to work on with each other or a certified coach hosting the session will give players a specific drill to work on based on request for 8 mins then switch out.

  • NO DUPR? NO WORRIES!
WE CAN HELP DEVELOP YOUR DUPR RATING & YOUR GAME, WITH YOU!!

  • If you don't have a DUPR rating, you will be initially allocated to either Court 1 and/or Court 2 for players at the Beginner level (DUPR 3.49 and under). NOTE: This rating cannot be just a self-assessment by you, so if you are not sure then you can discuss this with a fully certified Pickleball Coach to help identify and set up your DUPR Rating. The coach will refer you to the "USAPA Player Skill Rating Definitions."

  • MONTHLY DUPR ASSESSMENT: Once a month a certified coach will look to help YOU, re-assess your DUPR Rating by going through with you specific areas of the "USAPA Player Skill Rating Definitions" and then hold mini-DUPR matches with other similar skilled players wanting to do the same.

  • These results will then be uploaded to DUPR through the Pickleball FUN Community DUPR Page to "initialize" your DUPR rating.

  • One match result is all it takes to acquire a DUPR rating. Even if four players who are all unrated play and post a score, if just one of those four players subsequently plays any rated player, all four players will become retroactively rated. DUPR calls this process “connectivity.”

  • All matches are to 11, if 10 all, win by 2. Once a match is finished, then you must let another group of beginner players use that same court unless you are invited back in by the next group of beginner players.

** TO ENSURE COMPETITIVE MATCHES, AWESOME SPORTSMANSHIP & YOUR SAFETY! **

✅ FUN ENVIRONMENT: WE ALL have off days sometimes when things seem to go wrong no matter what we do; it is up to each and every single player to control their frustration/disappointment/anger and ensure this doesn’t ruin the game for others, whether it’s their partner making the mistakes or themselves. We all must look out for each other and create a safe and fun environment for everyone. 🥰

✅ DO PROPER WARM-UP ACTIVATION EXERCISES BEFORE YOUR SESSION: Warm-up activation exercises are very important to prepare your key muscles for the game and prevent injuries. NOTE: We have a list of activation exercises designed for pickleball which you can get from Jay McLean, just message him directly in OpenSports.

✅ PLAY WITHIN YOUR LIMITS: Do not push yourself beyond your limits. Know your capabilities and play accordingly.

✅ DRINK CONSISTENTLY THROUGHOUT YOUR SESSION: Staying hydrated is important to prevent cramps and other injuries.

✅ BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS: Look out for other players, spectators, and potential hazards on and near the court.

✅ DO NOT PEDAL BACKWARDS TO RETRIEVE BALLS: Avoid running backwards to retrieve balls as this can cause injuries. Instead, turn around and run forward to retrieve the ball.

✅ LET SOME CHALLENGING SHOTS GO: It's okay to give up a point to avoid injury.

✅ FEEDBACK: Ensure your partner is OPEN TO RECEIVING FEEDBACK during a game BEFORE providing any (e.g. would they prefer you waited until a time-out or the end of the game or are they open to receiving suggestions after every single rally?); remember the onus may be on YOU to keep quiet.

✅ DO PROVIDE POSITIVE ENCOURAGEMENT to your partner and even your opponents, if one makes a mistake or does an awesome shot; pumping up each other’s spirits can do wonders for your game!

✅ FORMULATING STRATEGIES (i.e. stacking) with your partner is encouraged but do ensure your partner understands and is comfortable with what is proposed; MOST IMPORTANTLY, allow them to provide feedback on your suggestions, it should NEVER be a “one-way street” as we are ALL learning and hoping to improve. Consider using words like “Can we please consider trying XYZ…” as opposed to “Make sure you do ABC or don’t do XYZ…”

✅ FUNDAMENTALS: It is expected that ALL PLAYERS follow FUNDAMENTAL PICKLEBALL STRATEGIES such as running to the kitchen line after returning serve (RETURN & RUN), SERVE & STAY strategy, both TRANSITIONING to the kitchen line and most importantly using a COMBINATION of soft and hard shots throughout the game and know when to use it (i.e. not just play as “bangers”).

✅ LASTLY, Don’t be afraid to HAVE AWESOME FUN & HAVE A LAUGH! 🤩🤩
