An incredible learning opportunity for jazz dance educators that teach in dance studio or high school settings. Led by master teacher, Joanne Baker of Decidedly Jazz Danceworks (DJD Calgary), this complimentary workshop will help educators understand the historical and cultural context of jazz dance, ground their jazz dance practice, and develop style and musicality in their dancers. A very unique opportunity to learn directly from Joanne before she launches this work across North American studios in the near future.

This workshop will include topics such as:

  • A breakdown of the open level class that takes place before the workshop (pedagogical format/structure)
  • Understanding the history of jazz dance BEFORE Cole, Fosse, and other "studio based" techniques, etc.
  • Musicality beyond "dancing the lyrics/melody" and using the music for inspiration and not just for tempo
  • Open dialogue about how to bring a rooted/historically responsible aspect to your studio teaching practice within the jazz dance genre
  • Honouring and understanding the roots of jazz dance to share with your own students

Note that although this is a FREE workshop, teachers will need to participate (even just watch if needed), the open level jazz class beforehand (5:30-6:45pm) to experience this work first hand. Please register here on the OpenSports app. At least 5 registered teachers are required for this class to run.

Please invite and encourage your dance educator friends to attend. All are welcome! This is a great opportunity to learn, collaborate, and honour the art of jazz dance as a community.
