What is a Member Rule?

How to Use Member Rules to Manage Your Organization

Member Rules allow sports organizations to filter and categorize players based on specific conditions. By leveraging data from Member Forms and registration activity, you can restrict access, send targeted notifications, and gain deeper insights into player behavior.

What Are Member Rules?

On OpenSports, Member Rules allow organizers to filter event invites to members most likely to register, using criteria like starred members, tags, past event attendance, and other member details. Member Rules define criteria that match player data or registration activity. These rules enable you to:

  • Restrict registration to specific players.
  • Send targeted notifications to selected groups.
  • Filter players based on history and attributes.

Benefits

  • Increased Event Registration: By targeting the right audience, organizers can improve event attendance.
  • Reduced Spam: Avoid sending invitations to members who are unlikely to attend, saving time and resources.
  • Better Engagement: Focus on reaching members who are most likely to be active and engaged with the group.

The Conditions That Make Up a Member Rule

Member Rules use different condition types to filter and categorize players. These include:

  • Member Form Conditions – Filter players based on their answers to form questions (e.g., skill level, age group).
  • Admin Member Form Conditions – Similar to Member Form Conditions but based on admin-only data.
  • Attendee Conditions – Filter based on the number of events a player has registered for or attended (e.g., events in the past month, competitive vs. social events). You can also find players who haven't attended any events.
  • League Player Conditions – Filter based on league participation history.
  • Membership Plan Conditions – Target players based on specific memberships.
  • Member Conditions – Identify players based on their group member status (e.g., active, banned, starred, etc.).

How to Set Up Member Rules

Note : Only available on the web.

  1. Navigate to your Group Dashboard.

  2. Click Settings and select Member Rules.

  3. Click Create New Rule.

  1. Choose one or more conditions (listed above) that define which players will be included in the rule.
  1. Specify whether all conditions must be met or if only one condition is sufficient.
  1. Save and apply the rule to registration restrictions, announcements, or data exports.

Adding Conditions from Member Forms

You can also add a condition based on your Member Forms to filter players using the information they provided during registration. This allows you to apply rules based on specific responses, such as age, skill level, or other custom data collected from players.

Combining Conditions

You can combine multiple conditions to create highly specific rules. For example:

  • Returning League Participants – Target players who registered for a league in 2023 but haven’t registered for 2024 by creating conditions for both years.
  • Senior Advanced Players – Identify advanced players over 65 by combining skill level and age conditions.

Real-Life Use Cases

  • Restrict Registration – Limit advanced sessions to players who have been to a rating clinic and meet a specific rating range.
  • Targeted Announcements – Notify only beginner players about a new league designed for them.
  • Data-Driven Insights – Understand how players are discovering your leagues by analyzing form responses.

Recap: How to Use Member Rules

To maximize the potential of Member Rules:

  1. Define your criteria – Identify key data points that will help you filter and engage players effectively.
  2. Set up Member Rules – Configure conditions based on player data and activity.
