Taking advantage of usage limits

There are several different discount types you can create with usage limits.

First game discount

Draw in new members with discounts on their first order. Check the Limit number of times a user can use this discount over time and set the limit number to 1 - this way, users can only apply the discount once.

Example of how to set up usage limits for first game discounts.

Pat and Harrison from Casco Bay Sports in Portland, Maine ran a 50% off discount for everyone’s first game, and by their second game, had a full house:

“I wanted to fill you in on our second pickup soccer event from this past Friday. We had some more bodies show up and ended up with around 18 people, so a solid increase from session 1! It’s been going really well and having the OpenSports app has made it go incredibly smooth and easy to run.” - Casco Bay Sports

Early bird discount

Making a limited number of registrations available at a reduced price can get people to sign up for your activities early. When setting up your discount:

  1. Select the event you want to create the early bird discount for in the Applies To section.
  2. In usage limits, select Limit number of times this discount can be redeemed in total and set the limit number to how many early bird registrations you want to offer.
  3. In usage limits, select Limit number of times a user can use this discount per event and set the limit number to 1. This ensures members can only apply the discount once.
Restrict early bird discounts to specific events and set up usage limits.

BOGO: Buy one get one

Encourage your members to bring guests to your activities by setting up BOGO (buy-one-get-one) discounts that grant them one free registration when inviting a guest:

  1. Set the discount amount to 100% to provide a free registration as part of the discount.
  2. In usage limits, select Limit number of times a user can use this discount per event and set the limit number to 1 - this ensures that each member is only able to use the discount once. When a member registers for an event and adds a guest, they will be able to use the discount for one free registration.
  3. To limit the number of available BOGO discounts, use the Limit number of times this discount can be redeemed in total.

Incentives for organizers

Provide incentives for your regular members to become organizers (e.g., become event hosts, help run activities by taking on staff positions) by prodiving discounts on registrations! For example, Philadelphia Volleyball has 13 event organizers! Dan Elliott, founder of Philadelphia Volleyball, has created a tight-knit community, with many regular members becoming organizers. To encourage members to get involved, Dan offered 100% off 5 events for anyone who joins as an event host!

To set up this type of discount, ensure that the discount amount is set to 100%. Then you have two options for sharing the discount with your members:

  1. When creating your discount, you can select specific users who are able to redeem the discount. If you know which users you want to provide the discount to, add their names here OR
  2. In usage limits, select Limit number of times a user can use this discount over time and set the number to how many free registrations you want to offer.

Leverage your existing networks

Social media discounts

Leverage your social media channels and see where members are hearing about your group by creating unique social media discount codes:

  1. When creating the discount, ensure that the Apply the code automatically box is not checked.
  2. Create your social medial post promoting your discount code and your group activity.
  3. Track how many members used your discount code through OpenSports reports.

Contests

Use discounts to engage your members in contests and grow your community. For example, Atlanta's biggest pickup soccer group, Sons of Pitches uses OpenSports discounts in photo caption contests. Simply set up your discount and send your discount code to contest winners to use next time they register for a group activity.
